The Desert Awareness Committee
The Desert Awareness Committee has been the community resource advocate for the Sonoran Desert since 1974.
Adult Education Seminar presented by The Desert Awareness Committee
Originally a committee under the Cave Creek Improvement Association, our efforts include:
- putting a halt to the capture of Harris Hawks in the foothills area for commercial purposes
- assisting with layout of hiking trails throughout the region
- designing signage for and providing continuing stewardship for the Desert Awareness Gateway Park in Cave Creek
- design and installation of signage for the Cave Creek Museum Gardens.
The group has been a continuous contributor to the Desert Place newspaper column, a collection of natural history articles about the desert which led to the publishing of our own book on sustainable living in the desert, The Fragile Desert.
Our later association with Desert Foothills Land Trust allowed us to expand our education efforts into the Cave Creek elementary schools through our Desert Reach program designed for fourth grade.
The Desert Foothills Library has hosted numerous adult education programs presented by visiting professionals and our own members.
Our recent affiliation with the Foothills Community Foundation gives us an even greater opportunity to reach our mission.

"Preservation through Education"
Our mission is to educate residents and visitors so that they may join us in understanding, conserving and preserving our fragile Sonoran desert, its plants and animals, its water and wildlife.
We accomplish these goals through our education efforts, including hikes, walks, fieldtrips and mini seminars for members, new residents and the community; the sale of our publication, The Fragile Desert; and our exciting school outreach program known as Desert Reach.
