The Foothills Community Foundation is pleased to announce
that Debbra Determan has been promoted to Director of the Foothills Caring
Corps. For the past year, Debbra has been the Community Liaison for the
Caring Corps, as well as managing the Mobile Meals and Van Transportation
programs. She brings more than 25 years experience in Human Services
management, volunteer management, and public health and social work program
development. Debbra holds a Masters of Public Health and a Masters in
Social work, both from the University of Minnesota.
In recent years, Determan has played a leadership role in social service efforts
that emphasize understanding and meeting the special needs of the elderly.
She sees many opportunities ahead for the Caring Corps program. "Over the
past six years, the volunteers of the Foothills Caring Corps have done a
terrific job of meeting many of the needs of the homebound elderly. The
greater community has been a significant beneficiary of the generosity of these
'neighbors helping neighbors.' The Desert Foothills area has such a
dynamic, growing population, with diverse human service needs. I look
forward to working with the local communities to plan for and meet these current
and future needs. The aging of the baby boomer generation brings with it
new issues and needs that will need to be understood and addressed. This
is a very interesting and exciting time for anticipating, planning for, and
implementing programs that will address the issues and meet these emerging
needs."

FOOTHILLS CARING CORPS’ VAN SPELLS
F.U.N.
The Foothills Caring Corps van program is one of its most
popular programs. The van is now in operation almost daily. During
March, Caring Corps neighbors enjoyed shopping at the Anthem Outlet
Shops, Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s; lunch at the Elephant
Bar, Thai Pan, and Tonto Bar & Grill; Movies at the Foothills and
Desert Broom Libraries; and Bingo and lunch at the Paradise Valley
Senior Center. Concert trips included a Tribute to Louis Armstrong,
Patti Page and the Lennon Sisters, and the Soul Solution.
To participate in the van program, you must be a Caring
Corps neighbor and must be able to enter and exit the van with minimal
assistance. To find out more about the van program or how to receive
Caring Corps services, call 480-488-1105.

Supported by the Area Agency on Aging and with the assistance of Basha's,
the Foothills Caring Corps office administers the Mobile Meals Program. Homebound residents receive hot and nutritious meals offered free of charge to those in need.

Caring Corps Holds
Sweetheart Soiree
The Foothills Caring Corps held a
Valentine's Sweetheart Soiree on February 13th at McGinnis Hall at
Christ Anglican Episcopal Church of Carefree. More than 100 Neighbors
and Volunteers enjoyed an afternoon of music, song, food, conversation,
laughter, and fun. Pastor Bob Hutson of Christ the Lord Lutheran Church
was the Emcee. Caring Corps Volunteer Roberta Jessing played the piano
while everyone sang along to old
favorites such as "Getting to Know You " and "Let Me Call You
Sweetheart." Russell Schmunk regaled us with "Frankie and Johnnie" and
"Ain't She Sweet," while Bill Manfred brought tears to our eyes with his
solo, "When I Fall in Love." Members of th e
Builder's Club from Desert Arroyo
Middle School surprised the audience with
an "Oldies Trivia Quiz" that came
with candy and prizes. Everyone had
a grand time and left with a Valentine, a hug, and a smile.

DVEA’s Annual “Break The Cycle” Raffle Benefiting Anti-Violence Programs is back
Anthony Viti helped “Break The Cycle” of domestic violence by entering the Domestic Violence Education and Assistance (DVEA) annual raffle drawing,
and was the lucky winner who chose the $10,000 cash prize.
This year the winner had a choice between the Sportster XL

Phoenician was won by Cave Creek resident Joyce Brown. Third place, a Trek Coasting Bike
was won by Celeste Gilbert and fourth place, 4 tee times and
carts at Quintero Golf Course was won by Mike Mattson. Proceeds from this annual event benefit DVEA’s anti-violence programs including:
- Second Step anti-bullying program
- Domestic Violence Shelter Holiday Gift Card program
- Mutually Respective Relationships Seminar
- Partnership with Consignment Shops
DVEA is an all-volunteer program of the Foothills Community Foundation, established to offer education and
awareness to those affected by domestic violence. DVEA serves Carefree, Cave Creek, North Scottsdale,

Give Away
your old clothes to a good cause
Domestic Violence Education & Awareness (DVEA) a
program of the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF) financially supports a
very successful classroom Second Step Bullying Prevention program at our
schools. They are looking for ways to raise
money so that they can continue to support and expand the program to
additional grade levels. DVEA is asking for your help...
DVEA has worked out an arrangement with Carefree Consignment and the Pink
Cadillac so that clothes may dropped off for consignment and proceeds
designated for DVEA. This money will be used for education programs in the
community. It seems like a great way for people to help support the program
with little effort. Clean out your closet, get a tax donation and help
support Second Step and other DVEA education programs.

During the Thanksgiving and December Holiday Season the Foothills

Planning is underway to build a YMCA and multigenerational Community Center in the Foothills.
